Insomnia is weird and confusing. ๐Ÿ˜ด

I think itโ€™s really hard for our bodies to naturally just get a full 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep every night. ๐Ÿ’คThis is something that has been introduced and basically forced since the dawn of electric lighting and it puts a lot of pressure on our poor parasympathetic system! ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ’ง๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ’Ž๐ŸŒณThe 5 Elements in Eastern Medicine can certainly shine a light on which organ systems need support depending on the time that we wake up in the middle of the night, but I also think that it is totally natural to have a regular witching hour (or 2). Our ancestors gave themselves a span of 10-14 hours to get those 8 hours, and it was very common for people to wake up, process thoughts from the previous day, get a snack, drink some water, have sex! They probably even gave themselves time to nap in the day! ๐Ÿ’†๐Ÿฝโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ’†๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ This just isnโ€™t as practical in our busy society and the overlap makes that middle of the night insomnia so stressful. How many times have you laid awake with anxiety about not sleeping? Itโ€™s the worst! It may sound easier said than done, but Iโ€™ve found that trying to just let myself have that awake time when it comes has totally changed my anxiety around sleep. ๐Ÿ

Counting sheep has never worked for me, but the more I just let my witching hour be a time for me to process rather than stress about not sleeping, Iโ€™ve actually found that Iโ€™m sleeping better and more soundly these days. โค๏ธ #sleep

I have a confession. Sometimes I have a really, REALLY hard time getting acupuncture ๐Ÿ˜• Itโ€™s hard to just lay there, not doing anything. My brain is so wired to constantly do something even at rest. ๐Ÿ’—

I have found that the 4-7-8 breathing technique has helped me tremendously! โœจNot only does it help me get into the acupuncture zone, but it helps me when Iโ€™m stuck in traffic, annoyed in a long line at the post office, and even to help me fall asleep. I especially love this mini meditation when Iโ€™m literally pinned down on the acupuncture table. ๐Ÿ“

This technique helps provide the lungs with more oxygen, relax the beta waves in the brain, and helps the โ€œrest and digestโ€ of the parasympathetic system. .
